Deciding that this was what I was going to do, I slunk off the bed and wandered over to the writing desk. Instantly Rupert sat up. “What are you doing?” He asked, staring at me.
“I’m going to write a letter to my sister.” I said, sitting down at the table and looking at the paper that they had.
“Why are you going to do that?”
“To tell her that I am alright. And then maybe she can come and collect me and take me home.” I picked up a pen, and was about to write, when I realised that I wasn’t sure of the date.
“Do you want to leave me already?” Rupert asked, sorrowfully. I turned to look at him and his eyes were filled with sadness.
“Well, it won’t arrive at her house for several days, and then it should take a few more days for her to find me. So I expect I will probably be here for another week. And you could meet Rowan! Oh, I would so like to introduce you to her!” I smiled at him, but he wasn’t smiling back. He still looked sad.
“Well – do you have to write it now? It won’t get sent from the post office tonight anyway. Can’t you write it in the morning?”
“Oh, alright.” I conceded. “But I’m going to think all night about what I want to say to her. It feels as though we haven’t spoken in a long time, and I know she will be worrying.” Strangely, Rupert did not seem very interested in Rowan. He just wanted to stay and talk with me. He laid back down on the bed, but he didn’t close his eyes this time. He was watching me instead. I decided to try and find out if there was something that could ease both of our minds.
“I know we haven’t got any money,” I said, “but is there anything that we can do for entertainment?” Rupert thought for a few moments and then looked at me.
“Not that I can think of,” he said, “because this room doesn’t have a TV, and the only thing around here that’s fun is the cinema.”
“Which costs money.” I sighed. Rupert crawled over to my bed from his.
“Please don’t be sad, Violet.” He said. I’m here to look after you, aren’t I?”
“Yes. It’s not your fault, Rupert. I’m just worried.”
“But I don’t want you to be worried.” He looked into my eyes, and then he smiled. “Wait here!” He said, as he scrambled off the bed and ran over to the door.
“Where are you going?” I asked, even more worried at the thought that he might be leaving me.
“To solve all our problems!” He called, one foot out of the door. “Wait for me, please Violet – I won’t be very long.”
“Well, it looks as though I haven’t got any choice.” I called back. He smiled at me again, and then he ran out of the door.
